The days passed in a blur of routine tasks, and soon she was awakened by Dulcimer’s voice: “Captain Trowley, your new specimen is stabilized and ready for formal observation.”

Barbara pushed her fingers deep into the gloves of the biosuit and clicked her helmet on. She heard the soft hiss of the suit sealing, followed by the green light in her HUD that her life support was nominal. She entered the examination room.

“Dulcimer, record speech.” Unused to speaking aloud, she cleared her throat and began. “Arborescent subject, approximately two meters tall, broad base bending anteriorly . . .” Barbara described her observations, her voice sounding foreign to her ears. “Subsurface anastomosing ridges, likely vascular, run dorsally along each of . . . thirteen limbs. Outer circle of eight minor limbs, approximately six centimeters in circumference . . .” Barbara walked towards the plant, waving her arms. The slender fronds began to uncoil towards her. She began to backpedal. “Limbs approximately . . . “When she saw that the plant had reached to its limit, she paused. “ . . . three meters in length. Limbs taper to a blunt tip approximately one centimeter in diameter.” She leaned in and studied the specimen’s surface. A layer of sap coated the limbs, giving them a glossy shine. Raised rings encircled each limb at regular intervals. “Rings becoming smaller and more frequent towards the tip, and increased articulation is evident.” She continued recording her observations, and as she did so, she noticed the thicker limbs from the inner ring begin to rise up and sway. They were paler than the long, slender limbs, which began slowly rolling themselves back as if no longer interested in Barbara. She followed the retracting, rope-like limbs as if they were a receding wave. “Central limbs approximately six to ten centimeters in diameter, apparently less mobile and -- hey!”
